Building on the Foundation - Stubble

1.    My efforts will not be in vain in Jesus name.

2.    I will not focus and labor on things that have no reward in Jesus name.

3.    I will obtain eternal rewards for my work in the Kingdom of God in Jesus mighty name.

1 Corinthians 3:9-15

9 For we are God’s fellow workers; you are God’s field, you are God’s building. 10 According to the grace of God which was given to me, as a wise master builder I have laid the foundation, and another builds on it. But let each one take heed how he builds on it. 11 For no other foundation can anyone lay than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ. 12 Now if anyone builds on this foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, straw, 13 each one’s work will become clear; for the Day will declare it, because it will be revealed by fire; and the fire will test each one’s work, of what sort it is. 14 If anyone’s work which he has built on it endures, he will receive a reward. 15 If anyone’s work is burned, he will suffer loss; but he himself will be saved, yet so as through fire.

We previously reviewed through how to identify and repair faulty foundations. We have also noted that each one of us is a building (1 Corinthians 3:9). We are not just any building but God’s building. Our lives individually are God’s house:

And what agreement has the temple of God with idols? For you are the temple of the living God. As God has said: “I will dwell in them And walk among them. I will be their God, And they shall be My people.” (2 Corinthians 6:16)

We have been enjoined in V10 of our text that each one of us should take heed (be careful, be watchful, consider appropriately) how he or she builds on that foundation and what he or she builds on the foundation.

We have also noted that, it is not enough to have a good and solid foundation; it is equally important to build a good structure on the foundation to have a house that could be lived in safely, comfortably, put to good use and be beneficial.

The Bible make us to understand, you and I could actually build our spiritual house with Stubble. We have seen what it means to build with hay and wood, we are now progressing to understand what it means to build with Stubble. Note that the spiritual affects the physical body and determines the ultimate destination of the soul of man, since man is made of soul spirit and body (1 Thessalonians 5:23).

Are you building with Stubble?

Building with stubble is tantamount to building a structure that cannot and will not endure.

Building with stubble is building shambles.

Pursuit of stubble, acquisition of stubble, reliance on stubble and building with stubble always leads to disappointment, loss, penury and shame.

That will not be your portion in Jesus name.

What does it mean to build with Stubble?

What is Stubble?

Stubble has been defined as: “the basal part of herbaceous plants and especially cereal grasses remaining attached to the soil after harvest”.

Stubble is therefore:

·       Remnants

·       Something desired that is not the will of God for you. We should seek to do only the perfect will of God for our lives according to Romans 12:1-2:

1I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. 2And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

·       Pursuit of things to the detriment of your soul or eternal placement. Jesus said in Mark 8:

36And what do you benefit if you gain the whole world but lose your own soul? 37Is anything worth more than your soul?

·       Pursuit of wealth while ignoring the giver and source of wealth. The Bible says in Deuteronomy 8:18 that:

But remember that it is the LORD your God who gives you the power to gain wealth, in order to confirm His covenant that He swore to your fathers even to this day.

·       Being disobedient to God:

The destruction of transgressors and of sinners shall be together, And those who forsake the LORD shall be consumed (Isaiah 1:28).

in flaming fire taking vengeance on those who do not know God, and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ (2 Thessalonians 1:8)

·       Not yielding fruits unto God or yielding the type of fruits the heaven does not approve of (Luke 13:6-9, John 15:1-8, 16).

·       An overly consuming attachment to the earth, not wanting to let go. Another danger with this is that when Jesus comes to take His own in the rapture, those attached to the earth will stay on earth with the earth and those who are attached to heaven and mind the things of heaven will go upwards, fly upwards into heaven (1 Thessalonians 4:13-18, Philippians 3:20-21, Colossians 3).

·       Being spiritually attached to the world and the things of the world without due cognizance being given to God and the things of God. The Bible warns in 1 John 2:15-16 which says:

Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.

What is the way out?

1.    Love God.

2.    Love your neighbor.

In Matthew 22, Jesus declared:

35One of them, an expert in the law, tested Him with a question: 36“Teacher, which commandment is the greatest in the Law?”

37Jesus declared, ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ 38This is the first and greatest commandment. 39And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ 40All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”

3.    Do not be attached to the world and the things of the world (1 John 2:15-16).

4.    Have a heavenly focus (Colossians 3:1-3).

5.    Read your Bible daily (2 Timothy 2:15).

6.    Be prayerful and stay in the love of God by being obedient to God (1 Thessalonians 5:17, Jude 1:21, John 14:23, 1 John 2:17).

7.    Live holy (1 Peter 1:15-16).

The Most High God will help you in Jesus name.

You will not build with stubble and every building of stubble in your life and destiny is destroyed today in Jesus name.

You will have a building of God, built with materials acceptable to heaven in Jesus mighty name.
